Pressy - the Almighty Android Button

The Almighty Android Button
Yes, a new button called Pressy has been introduced by Nimrod Back and his team. Although touch screens have no doubt taken place of actual keypads, the importance of having buttons cannot be forgotten.   This is why this team came up with a unique idea of having an extra button called “Pressy”. This “Pressy” button plugs into your headphone port and it can give you all sorts of application access and many quick access functions.

Pressy offers its users a unique set of applications to access easily by just pressing it. This button is really cool, but to work efficiently it needs applications behind it, because this button enables the Users of the phone to perform different kind of events by just pressing it, like turning on the photo, turning the camera on and taking pictures instantly, texting a message, or updating your facebook status. “Pressy” gives you the ability to do all that, all the users have to do is just specify the number of presses for each action. Users can come up with different combinations and the Pressy will do everything the user wants. Like a simple small press will tell Pressy to call your best friend, one long press may turn on the flashlight.

This Application basically works in the background and keeps an eye on the Headphone Jack, this enables Pressy to catch the event of pressing whenever the user does it. It is the unique functionality of the Pressy because its main objective is to bring quick access to the user without getting into a rush searching apps in the long list of apps.

Apple drop out of top five APEJ Smartphone race

Underperforming Apple has suffered another major setback as it has dropped out of the top five of the Smartphone race in the APEJ (Asia Pacific Excluding Japan) region due to the strong performance of Chinese vendors, according to a report published by IDC.

The study suggested that the Chinese vendors are tightening their grip over the APEJ market owing to their considerably inexpensive handsets.

Apple drop out of top five APEJ smartphone race

IDC predicated that the Smartphone shipments in the region will nearly double up by 2017 but the Californian manufacturer won’t have a significant share in that.

The analyst firm said that the Smartphone sales in APEJ in the second quarter of 2013 were dominated by Samsung that shipped 28 million units to secure 24% market share. Overall, 119 million units were shipped in the APEJ in Q2 2013. The Smartphones sales outnumbered featured phones for the first time in the period between April-June to grab 53% share of the overall mobile industry.

Apple’s fall in the APEJ region, where it single-handedly ruled for several years, did not appear as a big surprise as it has been consistently struggling against Samsung in almost all other big markets. A research firm, Strategy Analytics (SA), last month reported that the overall market share of the California-based company hit a three-year low during Q2 2013 as it recorded only 31.2 million shipments compared to Samsung’s 76 million Smartphone units.

In APEJ all leading Chinese players such as Coolpad, Lenovo, ZTE and Huawei are responsible for Apple’s downfall, IDC said.

IDC in its study reported that the people in APEJ are gradually moving towards the homegrown brands as they accounted for 38% of Q2 2013 volumes, up from 20% in the second quarter of 2012, and 7% in the same period of 2011. The examples of these rising brands IDC believes are i-Mobile and GNET (Thailand), Lava and Micromax (India), K-Touch and Xiaomi (China), Q-Smart (Vietnam), i-Mobile and GNET (Thailand) and  S-CSL (Malaysia).

ECONET introduces 4G in Zimbabwe

Econet Wireless has introduced the much-anticipated 4G services in Zimbabwe, becoming the first local mobile phone operator to roll-out the latest fast speed and connectivity technology in the country.

Zimbabwe’s telecom giant said its Long Term Evolution (4G) technology will go live in Victoria Falls ahead of the commencement of UN World Tourism Organization General Assembly’s 20th annual session, scheduled to be held in the resort town from August 24 to 29.

Econet CEO Douglas Mboweni said 4G technology, which is still not available in several European and Asian Pacific countries, is a gift for the Zimbabwean customers who were demanding the company to introduce more competitive value-added services.

He said that Econet, which was one of the pioneers in Africa to launch 3G well before countries like India and Nigeria, aims to utilize its expensive infrastructure to roll out a host of overlay services across the country.

The introduction of 4G technology in Zimbabwe means the customers will be able to surf internet, exchange e-mails and download movies and other high-definition stuff from the internet at speeds much faster than they have ever been able to enjoy in the past.

Initially the LTE technology will be available in specific locations such as international airports, five-star hotels and other high-profile locations in the major cities of the country including capital Harare, second-largest city Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions.

Mr. Mobweni didn’t reveal that when the 4G technology will be available throughout the country but said Econet Wireless is primarily targeting the high-traffic localities.

Huawei says 5G will launch in 2020

While many countries including US, UK and Asia-Pacific nations are just migrating from Third Generation (3G) to Fourth Generation (4G), Huawei has already set the sights on Fifth Generation (5G) technology – and plans to commercially introduce it by 2020.

A report publish recently by Bloomberg says that the Chinese telecom equipment giant has devoted hundreds of engineers to research and develop the technology, which is proposed to offer speed 100 times faster than 4G.

Huawei says 5G will launch in 2020

The 5G service will run on 10GB per second, compared with 100Mb per theoretical maximum per second under 4G. The technology will also allow people to expectance fiber network like interface on a wireless connection.

Zhou Yuefang, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Huawei’s LTE business unit, said that there will be billions of connections in the next seven years and 5G can provide massive connectivity. He said the process for new broadband technologies to become mainstream and adopted by mobile ecosystem usually takes at least five years.

Yuefang said that the company will install small cells within buildings to improve the quality of indoor coverage and ultimately the 5G will have enhanced spectrum management flexibility. The COO, however, refused to disclose the amount to be spent for the development of technology.

Earlier this year, Samsung had claimed that it tested 5G wireless service in-house and that technology was hundreds of times faster than 4G. The South Korean electronics giant had also announced the version to commercially roll-out the technology by 2020.

Mobile internet services began with 3G. Its predecessor 2G was for voice calls, while 1G refers to an original analog, voice-only cellular telephone standard that was developed in the 1980s.

Hong Kong Smartphone use doubled in two years

Smartphone for shopping
The Smartphone penetration in Hong Kong has been propelled to 63% compared to 49% in the same period last year and 35% in 2011, latest research has found.

According to the report, Hong Kong has the highest mobile internet usage rate in the Asia Pacific region, with almost 96% of users going online through their devices every day.

Japan occupied second place in the region with 94% Smartphone usage while Singapore and South Korea came in at third and fourth position with 93% and 92% mobile phone usage.

Google and Ipsos MediaCT conducted an online study in the first three months of the year on random sampling of one thousand Smartphone owners surveyed between the ages of 18 and 64.

Google’s “Our Mobile Planet Data and Analysis” tool ranked Hong Kong seventh in the world in terms of Smartphone penetration and South Korea and Singapore on second and fourth place respectively.
More than half of the respondents surveyed said over the past six months they spent more time online on their handsets than their computers.

The study revealed that people are becoming extremely passionate about their Smartphones, with 22% of respondents saying they could even eliminate their television favoring their handsets. Three-quarter of respondents said they don’t leave home without their beloved devices.

Almost all respondents use their Smartphones to research local information, 79% of them confessed to do so at least once a week and 39% doing it every day.

The study also said that a normal Smartphone user has installed 39 applications on their Smartphones, with at least 10 paid-for apps.

Facebook launched mobile games program for developers

Facebook has announced a new project – Facebook Mobile Games Publishing – to help small and medium-sized game developers distribute their own mobile game to studios worldwide.

The polite program will see Facebook promoting games in its own applications, revealing them to millions of its mobile users. In exchange, the social network will take the revenue from the developers who join the program.  However, the percentage of revenue it will take wasn’t revealed by the company.

Facebook has not yet announced the terms to join the program.  The only technical requirement for it is that the games should support Facebook integration.

Currently, there are more than 800 million people using Facebook mobile apps every month, with over 260 million playing Facebook games. The company will also give developers access to analytics tools.

Facebook has already racked up 10 developers including U.K.’s Space Ape, which is run by veteran social games maker Playfish, educational game maker Brainbow and Kiwi. Even though the social network began the project to target independent developers who lack the resources to compete with big game studios, a large French gaming company Gameloft has also joined the program with the game Kingdom & Lords.

The other small or mid-sized developers can become the part of program by completing the application form.

Following the news of Facebook’s entrance into mobile games publishing the shares of social gaming company Zynga fell by 1.3%.  Zynga was once the closest game partner of social networks but the two companies have become more competitive with each other since last year when the struggling company launched its own mobile developer partner program.

GSMA announced mobile commerce vision

GSMA Announced Mobile Commerece Vision
Mobile communication trade group, the GSM Association (GSMA) has announced plans to unite mobile connectivity with high street shopping experiences to help retailers.

At an event held last week in London GSMA, which represents nearly 800 mobile operators worldwide, deliberated how the mobile operators can utilize the Near Filed Communication (NFC) and the other related services to offer the value added services to their customers.

The affirmation of GSMA’s plans came after research, conducted by tech consultants Latitude, found that the mobile alerts would prompt almost 60% of US and UK Smartphone users to shop at least once a week. It said 80 percent will be interested in a mobile wallet.

GMSA, the joint venture of Telefonica UK and Vodafone – Weve – payment service provider – The Logic – and NFC specialists – Proxama – comprehensively discussed the idea of a ‘loyalty wallet’ during the event.

The loyalty wallet will use the NFC and related technologies to combine loyalty cards, discounts, offers and incentives and store items in a single application.

Anne Bouverot, the GSMA general director, said that mobile commerce will develop to support the entire customer experience and they will go further than visiting a single store.

He said the consumers are looking for flexible and all-embracing services that guide them with research, vouchers, travel directions, entertainment and several other aspects of an outing to a destination retailer.
Weve CEO David Sear hailed the idea of the loyalty wallet and stressed the need of collaboration between operators and retailers. He added that Weve is in talks with some of UK’s top retailers for the implementation of mobile commerce vision.

Vodafone released its 4G service in central Wellington

Vodafone has released its 4G service in central Wellington and Lower Hutt. The fast mobile internet service had previously been switched on by the company in parts of Christchurch, Auckland, Queenstown, Lake Brunner, Taupo and Wanaka.

Palmerston North would be the next city inline to get 4G. Vodafone’s 4G network build is being rolled out in partnership with long-standing partner Nokia Siemens Networks

Overall, there are more than 150,000 4G-capable devices connected to Vodafone’s network in the country. These devices include iPhone 5, iPad/iPad mini, Sony Xperia Z, Blackberry Z10, HTC Windows Phone X and Samsung Galaxy SIII.

Vodafone 4G service offers up to 10 times faster upload and download speeds than its slandered 3G network.  This means that a 4G-capable device that takes hours to download a movie on 3G would take just few minutes. A book will take less than a second to download.

Russell Stanners, the chief executive of Vodafone NZ, said that initially 4G services will be available to 30% population of the city but it will grow to 50% by September.

Currently, the Vodafone customers are paying an extra $10 a month for the faster mobile broadband speeds of Vodafone. However, Telecommunications Users Association has forecasted that the surcharge would soon be dropped.

Company Telecom, in April, said that it would’ve 4G available on 75% of its Auckland network by October and in 60% of Christchurch and Wellington by December. The local rival company 2degree is also set to kick-off its 4G network build in 2014 and has signed a contract with Chinese telecom equipment giants Huawei for that.

NFC Market worth to reach $10015.96 Million by 2016

The Near Field Communication (NFC) market will witness immense growth in both products and applications in the years to come, according a market research report – NFC Market – Global Forecast & Analysis (2011 – 2016) – published recently by MarketsandMarkets.

NFC market includes products such as NFC chips, readers, tags, NFC enabled SIM/UICC cards and NFC based micro SD cards while NFC applications include mobile payment, ticketing, access control, data sharing, and advertisements.

MarketsandMarkets, a U.S-based global market research and consulting company, after comprehensively analyzing the NFC market on the basis of products, applications, technology, and geography predicted that the total worth of Near Field market will reach $10015.96 million by 2016.

In 2011, there were only 5% NFC-enabled phones in the world and it will grow to approximately 46% by 2016. This indicates that the handset makers are rapidly adopting the latest inventions of technology into their mobiles.

North America, Europe, and APAC are the regions that are expected to make the most in the NFC market. While North America and Europe are still on track to become the major contributors of NFC chips market, APAC has already caught-up with the technology and has accounted for almost one fourth of the share of the total chips market in 2011. The sky-rocketing growth of the market in APAC is attributed to the countries such as South Korea, China, and Japan who had adopted the technology shortly after its invention.
Presently, the NFC application market is occupied by small group of players but a larger number of industry players are expected to increase their involvement with the growth of the application market.

The revenue of the applications market will grow by 35% to reach $34,515 million in 2016 from $7,686 million in 2011. The most productive of all segments is the mobile payments segment that includes both, in-store payment and on-line payment. It is followed by ticketing and access control segments.

MasterCard launched mobile wallet in UK

MasterCard Launched mobile wallet in UK
MasterCard has launched its MasterPass wallet service in United Kingdom, for the first time in a European country.

The service had already been launched in the United States, Canada, and Australia, but the consumers in Europe were yet to experience it.

MasterPass, which can be used online, in-store or elsewhere, enables the consumers to store all their payment, loyalty, store card, shipping and billing address details in one place.

The consumers can access the wallet of their choice and authenticate a transaction by clicking on a Masterpass button and entering a registered password for checkout. The credit card details aren’t needed to be entered to finish the transaction.

MasterCard said that the consumers can also add other branded credit, debit, prepaid and private label cards to their wallet.

Initially, the service is available with UK retailers Prezzy Box and The Hut Group but it will be available on website Boots.com next week and House of Fraser in the next month. The retailers do not pay for the service and instead card payment provider pays fee to MasterCard.

In the physical stores, the MasterPass checkout service works with both physical cards and mobiles. In case of devices, the payments are made via Near Field Communication (NFC) and QR codes, MasterCard said.
The MasterPass linked wallets provide retailers, banks, and other partners with their own branded MasterPass wallets. Alternatively, the existing wallets can also be connected to the MasterPass acceptance network.

The MasterCard is planning to launch the MasterPass wallet across Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East by 2014.

Samsung unveils Exynos 5 Octa chip with ARM technology

Samsung unveils Exynos 5 Octa chip with ARM technology
Samsung has launched its latest top-of-the-range smart device processor – Exynos 5 Octa – which it says has 20% more power than its predecessor.

The South Korean electronics giants claimed that the four 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 cores and as many 1.8GHz ARM Cortex-A15 processors in the chip allow it to boast 20% more CPU processing power than in the earlier Exynos 5410, used to power some versions of its Galaxy S4 handset.

The firm said that the mobile chip is capable of almost doubling the graphical prowess of the devices. The chip uses a new image-compression solution to reduce the power consumption.

The extremely powerful chip offers “desktop-quality” video editing and supporst 1080p high-definition video playback at 60 frames per second, it said.

Exynos 5 is the first production-ready chip to feature ARM Holding’s latest GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) architecture. The potential of GPUs has not remained limited to video games graphics and they are widely being used to handle the general computing tasks today.

Though GPUs are relevantly slower at performing single calculations than CPUs, their advantage is that they can carry numerous calculations at the same time. Specifically they are capable of handling the highly “parallelizable” tasks such as running augmented reality apps and applying filters to photographs effectively.

Using GPU isn’t very popular among the smart device manufacturers and the vast majority of smart devices use ARM-designed CPUs. The Cambridge-based ARM accounted for about 20% of the overall Android phone sales last year.

The newly-developed chip will replace Exynos Samsung’s current octa-core processor as the firm’s flagship chip. Octa-core processor was used in Samsung’s flagship device Galaxy S4 but despite of its remarkable success, Exynos chips failed to attract the attention of most of tech firms, who continue to favor Qualcomm Snapdragon and Nvidia Tegra chipsets.

Moroccan property market attracting wealthy investors

Moroccan property market attracting wealthy investors
The Moroccan luxury property market is attracting domestic as well as wealthy foreign investors, a new report has found.

The report from Aylesford International says that the country has witnessed significant economic growth over the last decade thanks to the strong macroeconomic policies.
Morocco is one of the few countries in the wider North African region that have rarely experienced social unrest. Tourism and home industry are the most prolific industries of the country and are the keys to its economic stability.

The report also says that there is now a considerable expat community in Morocco and the foreign residents are mainly from the European and Latin American countries.  The country’s liberal inheritance laws, moderate property transaction costs and the provision of excellent, high-end properties are the key reasons behind their attraction towards it.

However, recently, the economic performance of Morocco has witnessed deceleration due to the slow growth in European Union, particularly in Spain and France who are its main export partners.  To that end, Morocco’s Budget in 2013 has imposed taxes on buying and selling the property.

When buying a property, there is an agent commission of 2.5%, VAT of 10% Notary fee of 1% plus a Notarial tax of 0.5%. Additionally, there is also land registration fee of 3%-4%.

When selling a property there is no particular inheritance tax but gift tax like Capital Gains may be levied at a flat rate of 20%. The minimum 3% has been imposed on the transfer of property.

The Properties that are attracting foreign buyers include a 5-bedroom villa in Marrakech with two guest houses, a three hectare garden, tennis courts and pool priced at €2.9 million and a 4-6 bed villa in a private estate that includes a spa, a luxury boutique hotel and an 18-hole golf course, priced at €1.91 million.

Smartphone shipments in India grow 167% between Jan-Apr

Smartphone shipments to India grew by 167% in January-April from the same period a year earlier, the latest report released by research firm Cyber Media Research (CMR) has stated.

According to the report, nearly 10 million Smartphones were shipped within the South Asian country during the first three months of 2013.

South Korea-based Samsung retained its top-spot in Smartphone shipments by selling some 4 million units during January-April and making up about 40% of the total market share.

The homegrown companies Micromax and Bangalore-based Karbonn, who operate within the Rs 7000 to Rs 16,000 price point, occupied the second and third places respectively at 19.3% and 8.6% market shares respectively. This was the first time in the country’s history that two major domestic Smartphone manufacturers came in among the top three positions.

Cyber Media said the skyrocketing growth rate of the Smartphone is an indication that an increasing number of mobile phone users are migrating from feature phones to the entry-level Smartphones which offer internet browsing and content downloading. The feature phones witnessed a growth rate of just 2.4% during the three month period.

Nokia retained the leadership in the overall mobile shipment in the country, making up 20.3% of the market share, while rival Samsung pursed closely behind with 14.2%, up from 5% a couple of years ago.

The total number of mobile handset shipments in India for the first four months of 2013 propelled to 4 million units, up 11% compared with the same period last year.

The Smartphone users in India have now reached 108 million (calculated based of 850 million mobile phones users in the country), the report said.

Hewlett Packard plans to dive back into Smartphone Market

HP Back in Smartphone Market
Technology giants Hewlett Packard (HP) has announced that it plans to re-enter into the Smartphone market with a new flagship device.

Yam Su Yin, the Senior Director of Consumer PC and Media Tablets Asia Pacific, at an event in Beijing told news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) that the company is planning to cash the lucrative Smartphone market. However, he didn’t reveal when the company will come up with its new handset.

Yam said that HP is studying all the current offerings in the Smartphone market and is attempting to discover what it can offer that other players in the market don’t.

The Palo Alto-based company has dabbled in the Smartphone market in the past, when it acquired Palm and its webOS platform for $1.2 billion in 2010. By February 2011, it released the two WebOS Smartphones – the HP Veer and the Pre 3 – but the poor sales caused the company to scrap the operating system and hardware associated with it.

In the wake of the failure of WebOS, HP is likely to feature Google’s Android operating system, which accounts for the 69% of worldwide market share, in its future mobile devices. The company has already launched a number of Android-powered products, including seven-inch tablet and a Chromebook.

HP, the parent company of Plano-based HP Enterprise Services, is currently working on segments like all-in-one PCs, tablets and notebooks.

Hewlett Packard would face fierce competition by the rulers of the Smartphone market – Apple Inc. and Samsung – who together make up the majority of Smartphone market share.

According to IDC, the Smartphone shipments are expected to raise 32.7% annual attainment 958.8M units this year, increased from 722.5M units shipped in 2012.

Huawei unveiled world’s slimmest Smartphone

Huawei world’s slimmest Smartphone
Huawei Technologies Co, the telecom-network equipment giants, unveiled the world’s slimmest Smartphone – Ascend P6 – at an event in London on Tuesday.

Just over 6mm thick, Ascend P6 will be available for sale in China this month and in Western Europe in July, with the recommended price of €449 (£385).

Ascent P6 is packed with strong hardware features like 4.7-inch display, 1.5 gigahertz quad-core processor, dust-proof metal casing, a powerful 5 megapixels front and 8 megapixels rear camera. The device runs on a customized version of Google’s Android Operating system.

P6 is made up of glass and metal unlike its predecessors, the new version isn’t compatible with the 4G networks. The device comes in white, black and baby pink colors.

The touch screen of the phone is extremely sensitive and it responds only to the gloved hands.
The London event, held at Camden’s Roundhouse, was the first stand-alone global product launch of Huawei, who previously unveiled its new phones rather silently at the trade shows such as the annual Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Huawei has been most successful as the maker of telecom-network equipment such as antennas and base stations, surpassing American and European competitors to become the second largest vendor after Sweden’s Ericsson.

However, the company’s smartphone business is competing with an uphill battle. The release of a new Smartphone shows that the Shenzhen-based company is aspiring to establish itself as a customer brand by increasing its marketing efforts.

The analysts believe the latest flagship device will determine the future of the company’s Smartphone business.

The company is planning to release P6 in 19 countries including China, Germany, Italy and France by the end of July and 100 more afterwards.

Sony unveiled giant waterproof Xperia Z Ultra Smartphone

Waterproof Sony Xperia
Japanese Electronics giants Sony have launched a waterproof Android Smartphone – Xperia Z Ultra – with a 6.4in screen (16.3cm), describing it as  the ‘slimmest large-screened handset on the market’.

The new device is 6.5mm thick – slightly deeper than the thinnest device on the market, Ascend P6, launched recently by the Chinese telecom-network equipment giants Huawei.

Like original Xperia Z, which was unveiled in January, the enhanced version is also equipped with stunning features, one of which is that in addition to an optional stylus, it also accepts notes or sketches written using metal-tipped pen or a standard pencil.

Xperia Z ultra comes up with a 1080p resolution screen with in-built software to upgrade lower definition photos and videos. It has an 8 megapixel rear camera, and a powerful battery that offers up to 11 hours talk time. The 16 GB of internal storage of the device can be expanded to 64GB with the support of microSD cards.

The Ultra follow-up is highly water-resistant and can be submerged to a deeper limit – 1.5m (4.9ft) in freshwater for up to 30 minutes.

Xperia Z Ultra will be available for sale in Singapore and China sometime in July-August and in Europe from September.

Sony said it aspires to challenge Samsung’s supremacy of the jumbo-sized handset sector with its new flagship device.

The firm is not alone in seeking to grind down the lead of Korean Electronics giant. Several other players in the market have also jumped into the competition with their large-screened handsets. These devices include Huawei’s 6.1inch Ascend Mode, Acer’s 5.7inch Liquid S1; ZTE’s 5.7inch Grand Memo; Asus’ 6inch FonePad Note and Lenovo’s 5.5inch Ideaphone K900.

Samsung to launch faster Galaxy S4 Smartphone

Electronics giant Samsung has announced its plans to launch an enhanced version of its epic Galaxy S4 Smartphone that will transmit data almost twice of the normal speed.

The CEO of a South Korean company J.K. Shin, while speaking to Reuters on Monday, said the phone will be available for sale in South Korea by the end of this month.

The new S4 will be a bit more expensive than the current one, said Shin, adding the company is in talks with a number of carriers to introduce the device into the other countries.

The as-yet unnamed Smartphone will use LTE-Advanced 4G technology, an upgrade from conventional 4G called Long Term Evolution or LTE, to offer speed of up to two times that of the existing LTE device. The Qualcomm chips used in the latest flagship device will be compatible to the upgraded networks.

Thanks to LTE-Advanced, a movie which currently takes three minutes to download, will take a little more than one minute, said Samsung.

Samsung released a string of variations of smash-hit Galaxy S4 including Galaxy S4 Active and Galaxy S4 Zoom following its global launch in April this year.

The original S4, an Android-powered device with the 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display and a dual camera function, has surpassed all of its predecessors to reach 10 million sales in less than a month, which made it the most successful handset ever launched by the company.

Samsung, who emerged as the leader of the Smartphone market last year by selling over 400 million phones, will unveil its new Galaxy devices at an event in London on June 20.

WhatsApp hits record 27 Billion daily messages

Mobile messaging application WhatsApp has announced a new record for inbound and outbound messages sent in a single day.

The company tweeted that it processed 27 billion messages –10 billion inbound and 17 billion outbound messages– in a 24-hour period. It, however, didn’t reveal when exactly it received the new record.
WhatApp had handled 18 billion messages – seven billion inbound and 11 billion outbound messages– in its previous record during last year’s New Year Evening.

The massive disparity between inbound and outbound numbers is down to the addition of group messages in Whatapp, which means if someone sends one inbound message in a group it could result in several outbound messages to the other group members.

WhatApp supports Android, Asha, Windows Phone, Symbian and BlackBerry platforms. Unlike its rivals, the company charges users $0.99 per year for unlimited use.

Jan Koum, the WhatApp CEO, recently announced that the company’s monthly active users have been propelled to 200 million, more than Twitter and several other social networking websites.

However the service does face stiff competition in the emerging market countries like China, where Wechat, an instant messaging service of country’s social giant Tencent, boasts over 300 million users. In India Nimbuzz and in Japan Line, both have more over 150 million subscribers.

WhatApp has signed deals with operators across the globe and has partnered with mobile phone giants Nokia to offer Asha 210 feature phone which physically includes a WhatsApp button.

The company’s new record reflects the general shift away from traditional SMS (Short Messaging Service) text being sent by the mobile phone users.

Research firm Informa last month reported that the instant messaging apps outnumbered SMS messaging in 2012, for the first time in its 20-year history. It stated that last year 19 billion instant messages were sent compared with 17.6 billion SMS messages per day and predicted that the figure will reach to 41 billion by the end of 2013.

Vodafone Group confirms Kabel Deutschland talks

Vodafone Group confirms
Kabel Deutschland talks
Vodafone Group has confirmed the long-running speculation that it has been approached by Germany’s biggest cable operator – Kabel Deutschland – about a probable multi-billion dollar take-over, a move which would boost U.K. mobile company’s broadband and TV offerings.

According to reports, Vodafone has offered between €81-82 (£68-69) to Kabel Deutschland but it has dismissed the offer citing it as too low. The mobile company is now reportedly considering increasing its offer.

Since the unearthing of the U.K. Company’s interest in Kabel Deutschland about four months ago, the shares of the cable firm have rose by as much as 27%.

The acquisition of Kabel Deutschland, which has around 8.5 million customers across Germany, would help Vodafone to bolster its mobile and broadband footing in Germany, where it acquired a leading telecom provider – Mannesmann AG – in a takeover worth $180 billion in 2000.

Vodafone, the world’s No. 2 mobile operator by revenue after China Mobile Ltd, last month recorded its first revenue drop in eight years, with rivals offering more competitive service bundles. .

The U.K. Company is also loosening its clutches over the German broadband operations, acquired in the Mannesmann deal, as Deutsche Telekom AG and Unitymedia Kabel have lured millions of its customers with awe-inspiring packages during the past few years.

Since the German takeover law demands the bidders to offer at least the average share price from the past three months, Vodafone would need to put a value on Kabel Deutschland of at least €6.39 billion to proceed with the offer.

And if the deal goes ahead, it will be Vodafone Group’s largest since it started operations in India in 2007 and it will look forward to attract more customers by bundling mobile, fixed-line, TV and broadband services.

A recently published global survey conducted by Google and Ipsos MediaCT states that Israelis are the most fervent Smartphone users in the world.

The survey, taken in the first quarter of 2013, was based on the responses of 1,000 global Smartphone users between the ages of 18 and 64.

In 2012, the Smartphone penetration in the Israeli market stood at 35%, while so far this year it has gone up to 57%, witnessing a substantial 22% rise. Britain is the only country ahead of Israel, where 62% of the population own Smartphone.

Spain came in third with 55% Smartphone users while France and Germany are ranked 4th and 5threspectively with 42% and 40% of their populations owning Smartphones.

While Britain slightly edged Israel in terms of Smartphone ownership, but in terms of the device’s usage, the middle-eastern country surpassed all the European countries and America.

According to the survey, the most extensive use of Smartphone in Israel takes place at home (87%), at work (77%) or while travelling home from work or during a walk (72%).

Motorola to launch first U.S assembled Smartphone

Cell phone manufacturer Motorola, in its bids to make a comeback in the hot-competitive mobile market, has announced it will launch its new flagship device – Moto X – later this year.

Moto X, the first Smartphone ever assembled in United States, will be built at a 500,000 square-feet facility in Texas that will create about 2,000 jobs by this October.

Motorola
Motorola has already started hiring for the Fort Worth plant in Texas. The site was most recently vacant but it was once used by mobile phone giants Nokia. The factory will be owned and run by a Singapore-based contract electronics manufacturer – Flextronics International Ltd – which has a long time relationship with Motorola.

Moto X will be designed, engineered and assembled in the U.S but all of its components won’t be made there. The likes of screen and processor will be manufactured overseas.

Though the specifications of Moto X have not yet been disclosed by the company, it is rumored that its screen and display could be anywhere from 4.5-inches to 5-inches. The phone will use two processors to conserve battery life.

While most of the current phones use Gorilla Glass 2 for screen protection, Moto X is expected to come up with an enhanced version – Gorilla Glass 3 – to ensure the maximum screen safety. The phone is said to be water-resistant as well.

Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside said Moto X will have the feature of managing ultra-low power sensors; such as in gyroscopes and accelerometers, that can sense which components are currently not being used and shuts them down to conserve the power.

In addition to the Moto X, Motorola, which was acquired by Google for $12.5 billion last August, will also launch several lower-end Smartphones this year.

Agricultural land prices in Ireland rose by 10%

The Agricultural land prices in Ireland have risen by 10 percent in the first four months of this year, a recent survey has found.

The survey was conducted by estate agents Ganly Walters and was based on the land sales in Connacht, Munster, Leinster and Ulster regions.

The average per acre price in the European country has propelled to €11,511 as compared to €10,586, the average per acre price over the 12 months of 2012.

So far this year 3,000 acres have been sold out of the total offered 13,500 acres, the survey reported. The most activity was witnessed in Leinster region, where 4,680 acres were brought to the market at an average price of €10,345 per acre.

The agents sold Milverton, Demesne, Skerries, North Co Dublin on 468 acres over two lots on behalf of the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA). Their initial demand was €7.5 million but the deal is believed to have been conducted somewhere close to €7 million.

Internet messaging outnumbered SMS messaging for first time

The internet messaging has outnumbered SMS messaging for the first time in its 20-year history, the research firm Informa has found.

Thanks to BlackBerry’s flagship messaging service – BlackBerry Messenger – the users of Apple and Google Smartphones can soon send messages over an internet connection free of cost and avoid the fees charged by the telephone carriers.

Informa reports that the popularity of instant messages surpassed SMS messages for the first time last year and it is likely to be doubled by the end of 2013. The report states that 19 billion instant messages were sent in 2012 compared with 17.6 billion SMS messages.

The firm predicted that the Smartphone users will send 41 billion instant messages this year and this figure will grow to 50 billion by the end of next year. On the other hand, the phone users will send only 21 billion in 2014.

SMS service, which was first added to Nokia phones in 1993, remained the standard method for sending short text messages between the phones for two decades. However, in recent years it has met challenges from free instant message applications such as Apple IMessage and WhatsApp.

The reason for increasing popularity of these instant messaging tools is that their potential is not limited to text trade between phones and they allow the users to send group messages and share videos and photos as well.

Recently, BlackBerry has announced that it is planning to expand the BBM service to Android and iOS devices this summer, a move which may prove to eliminate SMS which has already seen significant decreases in use.

The company said BBM service currently has over 60 million monthly active users and more than 10 billion instant messages are sent every day.

Samsung sell over 10m Galaxy S4 Smartphones in first month

Samsung Electronics Galaxy S4 marked its introduction into the global market with a remarkable note as the company says they have sold more than 10 million units in less than a month.

In just the first month, sales of the new Smartphone from Samsung, has surpassed all of its predecessors.
The Galaxy S III had taken 50 days to reach the 10 million mark following its release last year. Galaxy S II reached the mark in five months while Galaxy S accomplished the milestone in seven months.

Galaxy S4 is currently available in 115 countries and will be introduced to 155 countries in cooperation with 327 partners, said Korean electronics giants, who emerged as the leader of the Smartphone market last year by selling over 400 million phones.

The Research firm IDC said that the massive success of Galaxy S4 will help Samsung to sustain its position in the Smartphone market.

Android-powered Galaxy S4 has a 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display and a dual camera function which allows the user to use both front and rear cameras simultaneously.

Currently, S4 is only available in white and black color, or as Samsung likes to say White Mist and Black Forest. But soon it will be available in more colors including Brown Autumn, Blue Arctic, Purple Mirage and Red Aurora, announced Samsung.

Apple’s iPhone 5 — the main rival of Galaxy S4 — sold about five million devices in the opening weekend of its launch, but the amount disappointed investors, who were expecting much higher sales. The market analysts had predicted nearly eight-million sales for Apple iPhone 5 on the first weekend.

Smartphone applications help you save 22 days of your time a year

Smartphone apps help the users to save 88 minutes of their time in a day or as much as 22 days’ worth of free time per year, a latest study has found.

The study was conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Click Software and was based on the responses of 2,120 U.S adult Smartphone users.

The report states that 97% of Smartphone users access at least one application frequently on their handset every day.  On average, a user saves 88 minutes of his/her time in a day by accessing the apps from their Smartphone and thereby saves 22 days of free time a year.

According to a recent report published by BusinessNewsDaily, email apps are the most frequently used apps on the Smartphone, pursed by text and social networking applications. The other commonly used apps are games, maps, weather, calendar functions and GPS.

Though email apps dominate the overall usage of Smartphone applications, people believe that they save more time using text apps than any other kind of applications. The text apps save 53 minutes a day compared with 35 minutes a day for email applications.

The Smartphone users confessed that apart from personal use, they use their device for work as well. One in five users of GPS and email apps said they use these applications primarily for work, while one in three said they use the abovementioned apps for personal and office purposes equally.

Researchers found that despite spending too much time on the Smartphones, the majority of the users don’t think that they are getting much out of them, because they are not able to utilize their devices properly.

Capital Group to build huge construction site in Mitino

The Moscow authorities have given the approval of another huge construction site in Mitino, the administrative district of North-Western Administrative Okrug.

The Capital Group, one of Russia’s biggest construction companies, will build a new zone of one million square meters.

The website Moskomstroyinvesta reported that the total construction area will be 975,200 squares. 675,000 square feet will be used for housing while the rest of other land will be allocated for public spaces including schools, business center, medical center, fitness center, playgrounds and parking. The company will also construct a big shopping complex and a modern hotel in the capital.

The area will accommodate more than 13,000 people. The estimated cost of the entire residential complex is $ 1.5 billion.

Urban Planning and Land Commission has given the approval of the new draft of city planning area in Mitino on 60 hectares. An official of commission said that this is the land of an ex-poultry farm, which owners sold to Uralsib, a leading Russian financial corporation.

In the mid-2000s, the company Zodiac was willing to build a gated community named “Christmas Hills” on this land. They took the project into the internationally renowned MIPIM exhibition several times to attract the investors but failed to get an interested party. Eventually, Uralsib started searching for a buyer for this land.

Uralsib’s agreement with Moscow authorities for a construction site involved Capital Group. A Moscow Building Complex official confirmed that the company will now implement this project with the help of some investors. The information, however, hasn’t been confirmed or declined by Capital Group itself.

Your hand will be your Smartphone in near future

Your hand will be your Smartphone soon. It sounds like a dream, but the day is not far away because the researchers in Japan are reportedly developing a world-shattering technology which will allow you to keep your mobile phone on the palm of your hand.

Smartphone in Future

The Masatoshi Ishikawa and colleagues at the University of Tokyo, using a special camera that unites two rotational mirrors and high-speed vision, have discovered a way to project a display of the device on your palm, or any other surface, so one can remotely operate it at office or home.

According to Ishikawa, with this technology, the users won’t need to carry a Smartphone or depend upon computer or a keyboard to use the phone and they will be able make a calls without anything.

Ishikawa said the system will have the power to detect the movements of 3D objects every two milliseconds.
A report presented by ABC news says the program tracks the moving object with the help of high-speed vision, allowing users to walk with the image of their mobile phone on their palm.

The computer system beams ultrasonic wave emitters to create the reflection of the mobile phone on the palm and users have the sensation that the keyboard is pressing against their skin.

Ishikawa, who has developed a series of systems using high-speed vision technology, said the palm phone will be become a reality in next two to three years.

Ishikawa’s latest accomplishment was the launch of a high-speed robotic hand last year.
